What are Torque Motors?

A torque motor is a special motor with soft mechanical properties and a wide speed range. The shaft of this motor outputs power at a constant torque instead of constant power.

1. Working Principle of Torque Motor

Compared to ordinary motors that use the interaction of electromagnetic fields to generate rotational force, torque motors use magnetic torque to generate torque. The torque motor is powered by an AC power supply, and the current passes through the electromagnetic coil inside the motor to generate a magnetic field, which causes the rotor poles to rotate. At the same time, the rotor poles and the electromagnetic coils generate interaction forces to generate torque.

4. Types of Torque Motors

4.1 DC Torque Motor

DC power is supplied, which is the same as DC servo motors, and most of them use permanent magnet excitation;

4.2 AC Torque Motor

basically the same as AC servo motors, with low output power, large stall torque, and small stall current, and speed control is achieved by controlling the tension through speed feedback;

4.3 Brushless DC Torque Motor

There is no brush inside, and electronic commutation technology is used to avoid the problem of brush wear. Combining the advantages of DC motors and the high efficiency of AC motors, it is widely used in occasions requiring high precision and high efficiency.

5. What is the Difference Between Torque Motors and Servo Motors?

5.1 Performance

Torque motor: A special motor with a large number of poles, which can continue to operate when the motor is at low speed or even blocked (i.e. the rotor cannot rotate) without causing damage to the motor. In this working mode, the motor can provide stable torque to the load.

Servo motor: Can control speed and position accuracy very accurately, and can convert voltage signals into torque and speed to drive the control object. The rotor speed of the servo motor is controlled by the input signal and can respond quickly. In the automatic control system, it is used as an actuator and has the characteristics of small electromechanical time constant, high linearity, and starting voltage.

5.2 Principle

Torque motor: Torque motor allows long-term low-speed operation (even blocked and immobile), and its heat generation is very serious. It is usually forced to cool with an external blower. When using a torque motor, you should pay attention to check whether the blower is in good operation. There should be a good ventilation environment around it, and dry and flammable materials are not allowed to approach. Flammable dust or volatile flammable oils, etc.
Servo motor: An automatic control system that enables the output controlled quantity such as the position, orientation, and state of an object to follow any changes in the input target (or given value). Servo mainly relies on pulses for positioning. Basically, it can be understood that when the servo motor receives one pulse, it will rotate the angle corresponding to one pulse, thereby achieving displacement.
